Vaping Styles

New to vaping? Then you might not know about the two main ways of inhaling. These are Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct Lung or Direct to Lung (DL or DTL).

Mouth to Lung Vaping

When you MTL vape, you inhale the vapour into your mouth first, collect it there, then breathe it into your lungs. 

Most new vapers start with MTL vaping because it closely resembles smoking a cigarette.

Most starter kits are designed for MTL. These usually have a restricted draw which again resembles that of a cigarette. Your local vape store will be able to help you select the right device and atomizer for you, while most online sites will label devices as MTL or DL. 

When choosing an e-liquid, select one which has at least 50% PG (propylene glycol), as these are more suitable for MTL kits and inhaling.

Direct to Lung Vaping

DL vaping is more like taking a deep breath of air. You draw the vapour straight into your lungs without collecting it in your mouth. 

Vaping this way can be more intense and with a slightly quicker nicotine hit. It also uses a lot more e-liquid, which means it is more expensive than MTL vaping. 

Most smokers don’t vape like this when they first make the switch from cigarettes, but it has become popular for experienced vapers who prefer large clouds of vapour.

If you try Direct to Lung vaping, you will find that you need to go with a lower nicotine strength than indicated in the table below. When Direct Lung vaping, the nicotine hit will be more intense, and a high nicotine strength (or high PG strength) could make you cough or feel light headed. 

Instead, try an e-liquid with a higher VG level and less PG. This means less of a lung hit but will produce more vapour. A VG:PG ratio of 70:30 or higher is ideal. 

The device you use is also important if you choose to experiment with Direct Lung vaping. You need a device with plenty of power, compatible with low resistance coils and capable of pushing plenty of air through. You should also select a wide-bore drip tip.

Wrapping Up

In summary, Mouth to Lung vaping gives you a better throat hit, is more economical and more closely resembles smoking. It is the best place to start when making the switch from cigarettes. Direct Lung vaping is more suitable for experienced or technically minded users who prefer larger clouds of vapour.
